Interior Design Program Launches Design Intitiative

ASHEBORO (April 7, 2010) – Randolph Community College’s Interior Design program is launching a student/community project that will offer free-of-charge design solutions to county residents or business owners. “The goal of the Randolph County Design Initiative is to actively promote the College in the community, support the success of our students, and establish community partnerships,” said Holly Barker, program head and instructor for Interior Design. The application deadline is May 1, 2010, for the design projects that will be completed during the fall 2010 semester.
To be eligible, you must be a property owner in Randolph County; both residential and nonresidential interior spaces will be considered. The owner must be available to meet with the Interior Design students on a frequent basis and grant access to the site for project analysis between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the months of August through December 2010. The existing or proposed project space must be a minimum of 2,000 finished square feet.
Services that the students will provide include conducting a project analysis; providing a design concept statement; presenting floor plans and elevations to show design development; creating space planning options; specifying furnishings, fabric, equipment, and materials; supplying a lighting plan with reflected ceiling plan; offering working drawings for built-ins, cash wraps, reception desks, and other custom furnishings; providing product information for purchasing products; and communicating the elements of the design to the client using color-rendered presentation drawings.
Only one applicant is allowed per household or business. Applications are available online at www.randolph.edu/interiordesign/initiative.php. Completed applications, along with any photographs that express the design intent or functionality of the space, should be mailed to Randolph County Design Initiative, Interior Design Program, Randolph Community College, PO Box 1009, Asheboro, NC 27204-1009. Applications must be postmarked no later than May 1, 2010; incomplete applications will not be considered.

The selected projects, one residential and one nonresidential project, will be announced by June 1. Selections will be based on a collaboration of design instructors and students, design need, and parameter of class content. The final student design presentations will be the first week of December.
Randolph Community College’s Associate Degree program in Interior Design is based on the foundations of the principles of sustainability with an equal representation of residential and commercial design. Classes are offered on both day and evening schedules. For more information about RCC’s Interior Design program, go to www.randolph.edu/interiordesign/.
