Residential Design Students gain real world experience with Asheboro Clients

Below is the design concept statement for our clients Vicki Moss and Jay Councilman.

Two becomes one in this home. Beautiful, sentimental pieces will be placed in a recreated design that will provide an oasis of comfort and an abundance of natural light. By creating versatility and capturing personal interests and preferences in the design, entertaining friends and family will be enjoyable and private spaces will be cherished.

This “live” project is taking place here in Asheboro, NC and our second year Residential Design students are working with the design-builder, Tim Garris; under the instruction of Ann Smith-Palenchar. Originally, the home was built in 1949 and now it is getting a new garage and a fresh interior layout.

After interviewing Ms. Moss, the students began working with Mr. Garris on floor plan suggestions and changes. Once the changes were approved, a space plan was created using current furnishings mixed with a few new pieces. Next, the students visited Connie at Carolina Supply, Inc. to select plumbing fixtures and to obtain estimates for budgeting purposes.

Last week, the students had the opportunity to visit Burgess Woodworks in Ramseur, NC. Prior to their visit, the students created designs, on the computer or by hand, for custom cabinetry in the kitchen, bathrooms, utility area, master bedroom closets, and study. While at Burgess Woodworks, each student reviewed her design with Ronnie Burgess and selected the wood, door style, hardware, finish, and countertops.

What’s next? Lighting and fabric selections…Currently, the students are working on reflected ceiling plans and specifying light fixtures for the home.

Stay tuned.

Students Competing in PAVE Competition

The Commercial II Design Students are hoping for sweet success this Fall as they compete in the annual Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE) Competition. This year's competition is sponsored by Godiva Chocolatier Inc., a global brand with multiple points of distribution, plans to launch a new iconic boutique that will highlight its chocolate assortments in company-owned locations throughout the world. The students are challenged to design a 1,000-sq.-ft. chocolate environment.

The Planning and Visual Education Partnership (PAVE), founded in 1992, has grown into the retail design, planning, and visual merchandising industry’s premier educational foundation, and a recognized advocate for design students. These students are the future of the industry—PAVE’s mission is to help them gain exposures and funds to further their educations, as well as their careers.

Educators, retailers, and industry suppliers support PAVE through active participation in the organization and generous financial contributions.

In 1992, PAVE’s founding board was comprised of educators, the media, manufacturers, retailers, and representatives of, at that time, the leading industry organizations. Founding organizations included ISP (Ruth Mellergaard, then president); NADI (Richard Stolls, then president); SVM (Martin Pegler and Eric Feigenbaum); retailers Cecil Besselleau of Belk Stores and Steven Bergquist of Federated Department Stores; Wayne E. Visbeen, who had recently started his own architectural design firm, Visbeen Associates, and VM+SD Magazine (Janet Groeber, then editor).

Since 1993, PAVE has sponsored a Student Design Competition for students enrolled in both two-year and four-year design programs. The competition challenges the students to create design solutions for real-life retail situations. The competition is open to U.S. and international design students PAVE has awarded thousands of dollars to winning students as well as providing an award to the school the students attend.
