Design Students Inducted Into Honor Society

ASHEBORO (December 1, 2010) - Interior Design students Emily Noelle Chandler, of High Point, and Sallie Ann Sullivan, of Pittsboro, were welcomed into Beta Theta Rho, Randolph Community College's Five-Star Phi Theta Kappa chapter, during the fall induction ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 30, in the R. Alton Cox Learning Resources Center auditorium on the Asheboro Campus. RCC President Robert S. Shackleford Jr. was the guest speaker at the ceremony, and Anne Hockett, vice president for instructional services, made closing remarks.

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society was formed in 1918 in Missouri, and RCC's Beta Theta Rho chapter has been in existence for over 10 years. Phi Theta Kappa's mission is two-fold: (1) recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and (2) provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges. The Five Star status for PTK chapters recognizes progress in the attainment of goals set by the chapter. These chapters have met a higher standard of quality programming.

In order to become a member of PTK, a student must have completed 12 hours of credit, have declared a major, carry a minimum of six credit hours, and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Residential Design Students gain real world experience with Asheboro Clients

Below is the design concept statement for our clients Vicki Moss and Jay Councilman.

Two becomes one in this home. Beautiful, sentimental pieces will be placed in a recreated design that will provide an oasis of comfort and an abundance of natural light. By creating versatility and capturing personal interests and preferences in the design, entertaining friends and family will be enjoyable and private spaces will be cherished.

This “live” project is taking place here in Asheboro, NC and our second year Residential Design students are working with the design-builder, Tim Garris; under the instruction of Ann Smith-Palenchar. Originally, the home was built in 1949 and now it is getting a new garage and a fresh interior layout.

After interviewing Ms. Moss, the students began working with Mr. Garris on floor plan suggestions and changes. Once the changes were approved, a space plan was created using current furnishings mixed with a few new pieces. Next, the students visited Connie at Carolina Supply, Inc. to select plumbing fixtures and to obtain estimates for budgeting purposes.

Last week, the students had the opportunity to visit Burgess Woodworks in Ramseur, NC. Prior to their visit, the students created designs, on the computer or by hand, for custom cabinetry in the kitchen, bathrooms, utility area, master bedroom closets, and study. While at Burgess Woodworks, each student reviewed her design with Ronnie Burgess and selected the wood, door style, hardware, finish, and countertops.

What’s next? Lighting and fabric selections…Currently, the students are working on reflected ceiling plans and specifying light fixtures for the home.

Stay tuned.

These students are the future of the industry—PAVE’s mission is to help them gain exposures and funds to further their educations, as well as their careers.

Founding organizations included ISP (Ruth Mellergaard, then president); NADI (Richard Stolls, then president); SVM (Martin Pegler and Eric Feigenbaum); retailers Cecil Besselleau of Belk Stores and Steven Bergquist of Federated Department Stores; Wayne E. Visbeen, who had recently started his own architectural design firm, Visbeen Associates, and VM+SD Magazine (Janet Groeber, then editor).

Since 1993, PAVE has sponsored a Student Design Competition for students enrolled in both two-year and four-year design programs. The competition challenges the students to create design solutions for real-life retail situations. Hello from Holly! A newsletter from your Program Head

What a start to an amazing fall semester! I would like to formally welcome new and returning students back to the Interior Design Program. I would like to take this time to share with you what's new and exciting opportunities that our students embarked on for the new semester.
With the begin of the semester I had the opportunity to participate and accompany one of our second year students, Amarinh Kongimanivong, to the WithIT Leadership Conference in Charlotte, North Carolina. Amarinh was presented at the WOW Awards Dinner, the Jena Hall Scholarship, which is awarded to two students nationally that exhibit talent and leadership in the field of design. At the conference, I was introduced to an amazing talent of women professionals in the industry. Many of these women are willing to share opportunities to our students.
WithIt is a national organization dedicated to encouraging and developing leadership, mentoring, education and networking opportunities for professional individuals in the home and furnishings industries (http://www.withit.org/). In keeping with this mission, WithIt has planned a Day of Mentoring for female and male students of architecture, interior design, furniture design, marketing/communications, manufacturing, textiles and sales, which we plan to participate. Students benefit by meeting a professional in their area of interest, as possible, and gaining an insider’s perspective on the High Point Furniture Market. The date as been set for October 20th. I look forward to seeing everyone there.
The second year students are currently competing in the PAVE (Planning and Visual Education Partnership)Design Competition for Godiva Chocolatier. Students are competing against other two, four, and five year programs for a chance for $5,000 worth of cash and prizes. The competition is heating up as we try for another sweet victory.
Interior Design is also hosting "Technology Lecture Series" in which professionals in the field discuss topics involving technological advancements in lighting, software, and social medias for marketing.
Many more details on program involvement are to come!

Interior Design Students Win First Place In High Point Design Center Competition

Randolph Community College Interior Design students Latasha Driver of High Point, Jenni Booth of Greensboro, and Melissa Stanley of Asheboro won first place recently in the Unity in Style competition at the High Point Design Center. The competition was part of a term project in the students’ Residential Design II class, under the direction of instructor Ann Smith-Palenchar. Two teams and a total of six students from RCC participated.
“Student selected fabrics, finishes, and furnishings for the project using manufacturers within the High Point Design Center,” said Holly Barker, program head for the Interior Design program at RCC. “Floor plans, elevations and perspective drawings were visually presented to illustrate the design intent.” Students were asked to furnish and accessorize a great room, dining room, and hearth room and were given a specific floor plan.
Judging was a jury process based on innovation and creativity, competency of the design solution, appropriateness of the design solution for the client selected, use of product, and presentation/rendering of work. The jury consisted of Carol Jollay, Jollay Design Associates, High Point; Madge Megliola, Megliola Design Associates, Greensboro; and Toby Morrison, The Design Studio, Sanford.
The competition was open to upper-level students in two-year associate degree programs and junior and senior students in four- or five-year undergraduate programs in schools in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and West Virginia. “The competition was fierce, but our students were in it to win,” said Barker. As first-place winners, Drive, Booth and Stanley will travel to High Point for the High Point Design Center’s Annual Winter Event on Feb. 19 to meet with design professionals and showroom managers, said Barker. The students will be presented with a $1,000 award check.

Randolph Community College’s Interior Design program is one of the oldest community college interior design programs in North Carolina and has an excellent reputation in the design community. The program is based on the foundations of the principles of sustainability with an equal representation of residential and commercial design. “The consistently high placement statistics for our alumni attest to the level of knowledge, ability, and quality of education our students receive with the Interior Design major,” said Barker. For more information on the Interior Design program, call 336-633-0318 or go to www.randolph.edu/interiordesign/.
