First and Second Place Wins in the Unity in Style Competition

I am thrilled to announce that our Interior Design Program won both first and second place in the Unity In Style Competition hosted by the High Point Design Center.  The competition was open to all associate and bachelor degree Interior Design programs in nine southeastern states. As a term project last fall, the students in DES 231 Residential Design II were given the challenge of developing a client profile and aesthetic then designing a residential space meeting specific functioning needs of the clients.  Students had to select and specify product from thirty different design manufacturers offered through the Design Center then visually communicate their ideas.

Help me in congratulating Sheryl Pugh for her first place win of $1,000 and Addie Welch for her second place win of $500.  Both Sheryl and Addie will be honored and presented with their checks at the Unity in Style student/industry reception held February 20th at Market Square.

Lifting Window Designs for Christians United Outreach Center

First year Interior Design Students under the instruction of Adjunct Instructor, Susan Reynolds just completed a visual merchandising display for Christians United Outreach Center, a non-profit organization located  in Asheboro, North Carolina.  As part of the project the two teams of students merchandised and dressed two store front windows to promote ladies and men's wearable clothing, as well as; the home goods portion of the thrift store.  By elevating the store front design CUOC hopes to entice more shoppers to try their store.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this month CUOC assists people in need from all over Randolph County. Their services give people financial assistance and offer hope to move past adversity.  For more information on CUOC and how they make a difference in our community you can view their website at:  www.cuoc.org.

Designing Pride in American Made Textiles

Second year Interior Design Student, Sheryl Pugh, just completed a volunteer project for Wells Hosiery of Asheboro, North Carolina.  As a way to boost design aesthetics and pride in their manufacturing plant, Pugh designed a twenty-five foot long mural replicating the American flag using over a hundred stockings made by the workers.  Pugh worked with the company's textile designer and colorist to custom design and dye each hose to be woven into the design.  After conceptualizing the mural took a team of three people two days to complete.

The outcome is nothing short of spectacular stated, Vice President of Operations, Mickey Smith; who was impressed with Pugh's creative talents.  "She (Pugh) really grabbed the essence of what our company is about and we are grateful."

Mary's House: Design for a Cause

Situated in a residential neighborhood in downtown Greensboro, Mary's House is a faith-based ministry under the direction of Craig Thomas, that provides transitional housing to homeless women who suffer from substance abuse or addiction issues.  Mary's House is one if the few programs in the United States that allows children to live with their mother while she is in treatment and rebuilding her family's lives.

As part of the Residential Design II class the students completed a three week design project for each of the living spaces below.  Check them out!

A Great Time Researching at Victory Junction

My DES 241 Commercial Design class just finished a 15 week project for the Furniture Library Competition.  As part of the projects students had to universally design a two story special needs youth camp in the Poconos.  To gather research for the project the students explored Victory Junction Camp just down the road from Asheboro in Randleman.  Victory Junction Victory Junction enriches the lives of children with serious illnesses by providing life-changing camping experiences that are exciting, fun and empowering, at no cost to children or their families.

Since opening our gates in 2004, our year-round programs not only challenge campers to find resilience by looking beyond their illness, but provide a safe place to try new things under unobtrusive, complete 24-hour medical supervision. The state-of-the-art facilities are intentionally designed to be accessible and inclusive for all campers affected by one of the many diagnoses served at camp.

Victory Junction strives to create a foundation that fosters independence, confidence and continuous growth after camp to better the quality of life for children. We are honored to have provided camp to children from all 50 states, as well as several foreign countries. Victory Junction is a member of Paul Newman’s renowned SeriousFun Children’s Network and is accredited by the rigorous guidelines of the American Camping Association.

The High Point Furniture Library given a $10,000 scholarship annually to the first place winner of the competition.  The Interior Design portion of the competition is open to all associates and bachelor degree programs in the United States.  Entries ended January 2nd and the winner will be announced in February.

Field Trips: A Year in Review

Hello RCC Students!

I hope that each and everyone one of you are enjoying the "SNOWAPOCALYPSE" and time off from class, frankly I would be lying if I said that I didn't.  More than likely class will be cancelled on Friday as well, but I hope to see you in class on Monday, that is, if we can shovel our way out!

I have taken these past two days "class free" to finally blog, download, and edit photos from our graduation and summer/fall semester.  All I can say is wow we were a busy group!

I would also like to thank those who provided us with field trips and hosting our class, but are not in the photos.  Special thanks goes to Sara Lyke and WithIT for their Market/Student Mentoring Program, Mark Woodward and Debra Sommerville for the Baker plant and showroom tour, Dr. John Turpin from High Point University for discussing transfer credit, and to  Furnitureland South.

Enjoy the photos.  Come on sunshine!
